What is Alkaline batteries, Zinc Chloride batteries and Zinc Carbon batteries?

In our daily life, when we are talking about dry batteries, they are generally referring to 3 kinds of batteries as below:

Alkaline battery
Zinc Carbon battery
Zinc Chloride battery

Among them, Zinc Carbon type would be further divided into S, C and P types according to their internal structures. Because of the difference in production procedure, construction and the raw materials used, their characteristics are also different.

S type and C type has very close characteristics:

In S type, DR20 & DR14 sized battery often apply this technique. They have the advantages of relatively low production cost, matured technique, and stable quality. The disadvantages are higher chance of electrolyte leakage and voltage retention is poor during storage.

In C type, currently DR20, DR14, DR6, DR03 and 6F22 (9V) sized battery is widely availing this technique. The advantage of this technique is the usability of battery capacity is higher. Optimization of chemical formula is feasible, so that the discharge time can be extended after adjusting the composition of raw material. Improvement is obviously especially in DR06, DR14 and DR20 batteries. Besides, the price for this battery type is more flexible in various aspects such as package (metal or PVC jacket) and label etc.

Above mentioned batteries belong to S&C battery. They release water molecules during chemical reaction. Hence the occurrence of electrolyte leakage is higher.

On the contrary, P type (Zinc Chloride) battery will absorb water molecule during chemical reaction. So theoretically leakage phenomenon will not happen. We also call it leakage proof battery for this reason. This type of battery has a higher capacity, good stability. But of course the price will be a bit higher than other types.
